On the evening of August 7, 2022, a fatal officer-involved shooting occurred in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 31-year-old Zachary James Garrard. The incident unfolded just before 10:00 p.m. at a gas station situated near the intersection of 55th Street and Prospect Avenue on the city's East Side. Kansas City Police Department officers had arrived at the location after identifying an unoccupied SUV in the parking lot that had been reported stolen.
Two officers, both in uniform, approached the vehicle to investigate while the driver was believed to be inside the convenience store.
As the officers waited by the stolen sport utility vehicle, Garrard exited the business and entered the driver’s seat. According to accounts provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which later took over the investigation, Garrard attempted to flee the scene. He allegedly threw the vehicle into reverse before shifting gears and accelerating forward. Authorities stated that he drove the SUV directly toward one of the officers standing nearby. The officer reportedly dove out of the path of the oncoming vehicle to avoid being struck.
The situation escalated rapidly as the SUV collided with the police department’s patrol van. Following this impact, the officers discharged their service weapons, striking Garrard. Emergency medical services were called to the scene, and Garrard was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. Despite medical intervention, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control was tasked with leading the investigation into the use of lethal force, a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in the area. Investigators reviewed surveillance video from the gas station as well as body-worn camera footage from the officers involved to piece together the exact sequence of events. No other suspects were sought in connection with the incident, as the confrontation was isolated to the interaction between Garrard and the responding law enforcement officials.
