In a quiet neighborhood in northeast Kansas City, the life of 34-year-old Michael Uttley, a white male, was brought to a violent and tragic end on a Sunday evening in March. The incident unfolded at a residence in the 400 block of South White Avenue, a house that some neighbors had reportedly come to view as a source of trouble and illegal activity.
On that particular evening, two men arrived at the home and asked to speak with Uttley.
According to his girlfriend, who was present at the time, she went upstairs shortly after the men arrived, only to be startled by the sound of gunshots. When she rushed back downstairs, she found Uttley in the foyer, suffering from gunshot wounds. He died at the scene. The two men who had come to see him fled the area on foot, heading south on White Avenue.
The investigation that followed led police to identify Brandon Pritchard, 37, as a suspect. Court documents revealed a tense confrontation preceded the fatal shooting. Pritchard was the ex-boyfriend of Uttley's girlfriend. He and another man had entered the home, leading to an argument. Uttley, who had armed himself with a gun upon their entry, reportedly told the men to leave. Pritchard was heard yelling, 'You know me, why you pulling a gun on me?' to which Uttley replied, 'Because you came into my house.' Shortly after this exchange, the fatal shots were fired.
Four days after the shooting, on March 25, 2021, police arrested Pritchard. The man who was with Pritchard during the incident told detectives they had gone to the house so Pritchard could talk to the woman. In March 2023, a Jackson County jury convicted Brandon Pritchard of voluntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, and first-degree burglary in connection with Michael Uttley's death.
