In the early morning hours of September 3, 2023, Kansas City police officers responded to a call regarding a shooting in the downtown area. Around 3:45 a.m., authorities arrived at the scene near West 8th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, a location situated within the city's historic Garment District. Upon searching the vicinity, officers discovered an unresponsive male lying in a park area who appeared to be suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel were
summoned to the scene to render aid and transport the wounded individual to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Despite the life-saving measures attempted by first responders and medical staff, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival at the medical facility. The incident marked the city's 139th homicide recorded that year.
The victim was identified as Antwan Cortez Hill Sr., a 33-year-old man. Following the shooting, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators processed the area for evidence, but initial reports did not indicate that any suspects had been immediately identified or apprehended.
