On the evening of September 18, 2024, a violent double homicide occurred in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 15-year-old male Antonio Frazier Jr. and another young man. The incident took place near Maple Park in the 300 block of Maple Boulevard, where the victims had been lured under the pretense of completing a transaction involving a firearm.
Investigators later determined that the meeting was a setup orchestrated by individuals planning a robbery, reportedly in retaliation for a separate theft that had occurred the previous day.
As the events unfolded, surveillance footage captured a dark blue Chrysler 300 arriving in the area shortly before the shooting. Two individuals exited the vehicle and approached Frazier and 22-year-old Jimmy Bowman as they walked from the park. Gunfire quickly erupted, and both victims sustained fatal injuries, being pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Crime scene investigators recovered numerous shell casings from the location, which played a crucial role in reconstructing the sequence of events.
Detectives utilized the surveillance video and license plate reader technology to track the suspect vehicle. The investigation revealed that the car had been reported stolen earlier in the month but was retrieved from a tow lot by one of the suspects prior to the shooting. The vehicle was eventually traced across the state to Maryland Heights, Missouri. Law enforcement officers located the car in the parking lot of a motel, where they arrested 18-year-old Austin Stiles, who was 17 at the time of the offense.
Legal proceedings were initiated against two primary suspects. Austin Stiles was certified to stand trial as an adult and initially faced charges of second-degree murder and first-degree robbery. He ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree felony murder and armed criminal action, receiving a total prison sentence of 15 years. A second suspect, Jared Catarino, was indicted and later found guilty by a jury of voluntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, and stealing firearms, with the jury recommending a substantial prison term for his role in the deaths.
