In the early evening of December 13, 2020, a quiet residential street in south Kansas City, Missouri, became the scene of a chaotic and fatal shootout. Deron Bandy, a 21-year-old male, was killed in the exchange of gunfire between occupants of two vehicles. The incident unfolded in the 9800 block of Cambridge Avenue, culminating in the vehicle Bandy was in crashing into the front yard of a home on East 98th Terrace.
Responding to calls from concerned residents who heard the gunshots, police discovered Bandy inside the crashed vehicle, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The violent encounter was captured on a resident's doorbell camera, providing a chilling glimpse into the event. The footage showed individuals from a silver or tan SUV firing at the Jeep Bandy occupied. After the Jeep crashed, several people from that vehicle were seen fleeing and getting into the SUV, which then sped away. Investigators recovered numerous shell casings from the scene, which spanned approximately a block, indicating the intensity of the shootout. The Kansas City Police Department identified a silver or tan 2010 Ford Explorer as a vehicle of interest and appealed to the public for any information regarding the vehicle and its occupants.
Despite the video evidence and public appeals for information, no arrests have been announced in connection with the death of Deron Bandy. The individuals responsible for the shooting remain unidentified, and the case is still an open investigation. Police have encouraged anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible to justice. At the time of his death, Bandy had a previous criminal charge from 2017 related to burglary and theft of firearms.
