On July 18, 2022, Jose Padilla, a 28-year-old resident of Pomona, California, was tragically shot and killed at the Claremont Lodge located at 736 S. Indian Hill Blvd in Claremont. The incident occurred around 12:10 a.m. when Claremont Police responded to reports of gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, officers found Padilla suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot.
Despite the life-saving efforts of paramedics from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Padilla succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify John Martinez, a 45-year-old man also from Pomona, as the primary suspect. Martinez was located a short time later in West Covina and was arrested without incident. He was subsequently booked on suspicion of murder at the Claremont Police Department Jail and held on a $4 million bail. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office filed murder charges against Martinez on July 19, and he was arraigned the following day in Pomona Superior Court. Martinez was then transferred to the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at its Downtown L.A. jail.
In addition to the murder charge, Martinez faced two additional felony charges: possession of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was also charged with a misdemeanor for brandishing a weapon. The case against Martinez continued to develop, with his next court date scheduled for August 10, 2022. Claremont Police confirmed that there were no other suspects involved in the case and urged anyone with information to come forward.
