Clarence Hill: The Duck Island Killer

Introduction

Clarence Hill, infamously known as "The Duck Island Killer," was an American serial killer who terrorized the areas around Duck Island, New Jersey, between 1938 and 1942. His modus operandi involved attacking couples parked in secluded lovers' lanes, leading to a series of brutal murders that shocked the community.

Background

Born in 1911, Hill was a former Sunday school teacher and father of two. Despite his seemingly ordinary life, he harbored a dark side that led him to commit heinous crimes. In 1943, he was drafted into the Army and stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. His military service, however, did not deter his violent tendencies.

The Crimes

Hill's attacks were characterized by their brutality and the specific targeting of couples seeking privacy. Below is a detailed account of his known victims:
  • November 8, 1938: Vincenzo "Jim" Tonzillo (20) and Mary Myatovich (16) were parked at Duck Island when they were ambushed by Hill. Tonzillo was shot dead after refusing Hill's demand for money. Myatovich was shot, raped, and left for dead. She managed to provide a description of the attacker before succumbing to her injuries the following day.
  • October 1, 1939: Frank J. Kasper (28) and Katherine Werner (36) were found dead on Duck Island. Kasper was shot in the head and neck, while Werner was beaten to death as she attempted to flee. Their extramarital affair added complexity to the investigation.
  • November 16, 1940: Ludovicum J. Kovacs (35) and Caroline Moriconi (27) were discovered in their car in a wooded area off Cypress Lane in Hamilton Township. Both were killed by shotgun blasts, consistent with Hill's previous attacks.
  • March 7, 1942: John Testa (25) and Antoinette Marcantonio (21) were attacked near Morrisville, Pennsylvania. They were robbed, shot at, and beaten with a shotgun stock but managed to survive. A broken piece of the shotgun, containing a partial serial number, was recovered, which later played a crucial role in tracing the weapon back to Hill.
