Ludovicum J. Kovacs, a 35-year-old male, is remembered almost entirely through the grim record of a serial killer rather than through any surviving portrait of his life. In the autumn of 1940 he was living in the Trenton area of New Jersey and carrying on a secret romance with a woman named Caroline Moriconi, whose name later sources sometimes render as Carolina Maroconi.
