Overview of the Crimes
Between 1971 and 1973, the city of Rochester, New York, was shaken by a series of brutal child murders, infamously known as the "Alphabet Murders" or "Double Initial Murders." The moniker stems from the chilling pattern observed: each victim was a young girl whose first and last names began with the same letter, and their bodies were discovered in towns starting with that same letter. Despite extensive investigations, these heinous crimes remain unsolved.Victim 1: Carmen Colón
On November 16, 1971, 10-year-old Carmen Colón disappeared while running an errand for her grandmother. She was last seen at a pharmacy on West Main Street in Rochester. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Carmen enter a car parked nearby. Tragically, two days later, her partially clothed body was discovered in a gully near Churchville, approximately 12 miles from where she was last seen. An autopsy revealed that Carmen had been sexually assaulted and strangled.Victim 2: Wanda Walkowicz
Seventeen months later, on April 2, 1973, 11-year-old Wanda Walkowicz vanished while returning home from a grocery store on Conkey Avenue. Her mother reported her missing when she failed to return by evening. The following day, Wanda's fully clothed body was found at the bottom of an embankment off State Route 104 in Webster, about seven miles from Rochester. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled with a ligature. Investigators found white cat hairs on her clothing, despite her family not owning a cat. ...Read MoreVictims
