Itzcoatl Misael Ocampo: A Detailed Account of His Crimes

Background

Itzcoatl Misael Ocampo, born on March 20, 1988, in Mexico City, Mexico, immigrated to the United States with his family, eventually settling in Yorba Linda, California. He attended Esperanza High School and later enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving a deployment in Iraq in 2008. Upon returning, Ocampo struggled with unemployment and exhibited signs of untreated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), leading to a decline in his mental health.

Crimes

Between October 2011 and January 2012, Ocampo embarked on a series of brutal murders in Orange County, California, targeting both acquaintances and homeless individuals. His victims and the circumstances of their deaths are detailed below:
  • Raquel Estrada (53) and Juan Herrera (34)
    • Date: October 25, 2011
    • Location: Yorba Linda, California
    • Details: Estrada and her son, Juan Herrera, were found brutally stabbed in their home. Estrada suffered over 30 stab wounds, while Herrera endured more than 60. Initially, Eder Herrera, Estrada's other son and Ocampo's former classmate, was arrested but later released when DNA evidence linked Ocampo to the murders.
  • James McGillivray (53)
    • Date: December 20, 2011
    • Location: Placentia, California
    • Details: McGillivray, a homeless man, was attacked while sleeping outside a shopping center. Surveillance footage captured Ocampo stabbing him over 40 times in the head, neck, and upper torso.
  • Lloyd "Jim" Middaugh (42)
    • Date: December 28, 2011
    • Location: Anaheim, California
    • Details: Middaugh, another homeless individual, was found under a bridge along the Santa Ana River Trail. He had been stabbed over 50 times in the head and torso.
  • Paulus "Dutch" Smit (57)
    • Date: December 30, 2011
    • Location: Yorba Linda, California
    • Details: Smit, a homeless man, was discovered in a stairwell behind the Yorba Linda Public Library with more than 60 stab wounds.
  • John Berry (64)
    • Date: January 13, 2012
    • Location: Anaheim, California
    • Details: Berry, a Vietnam War veteran, was attacked near a fast-food restaurant. Witnesses saw Ocampo stabbing Berry multiple times and pursued him as he fled the scene, leading to his arrest.

Arrest and Death

Ocampo was apprehended on January 13, 2012, shortly after attacking John Berry. Witnesses provided descriptions that led to his capture.
