Overview
On September 22, 1988, Clemmie Henderson, age 40, went on a shooting spree on Chicago’s West Side. His rampage began at an auto parts store and continued at the nearby Moses Montefiore School, resulting in multiple deaths before Henderson was killed by police.
Sequence of Events and Details
- At approximately 10 a.m., Henderson entered the Comet Auto Parts store at 1334 South Ashland Avenue in Chicago and opened fire with a .38-caliber pistol, killing two individuals behind the counter.
- He then exited and shot a city sanitation (trash) worker, wounding him.
- Henderson crossed the street to Moses Montefiore School (also known as Moses Montefiore Academy), located at about 1310–1314 South Ashland Avenue. There, he killed the school custodian outside the building and then entered the school to fatally shoot a police youth officer and wound another officer who bravely returned fire.
- The shooter was ultimately shot and killed by Officer Gregory Jaglowski, who despite being wounded, managed to stop the rampage.
