Matthew Murray – 2007 Mass Murders in Colorado

Background

Matthew John Murray, a 24-year-old from Englewood, Colorado, carried out a series of deadly shootings in December 2007. Struggling with mental health issues, isolation, and resentment toward the religious community in which he was raised, Murray turned his anger into a violent rampage that shook Colorado’s Christian community. His attacks targeted two religious institutions on the same day, leaving five people dead (including himself) and several injured.

Timeline of Events

On December 9, 2007, Murray began his attacks at a Youth With A Mission (YWAM) training center in Arvada, Colorado. Roughly 12 hours later, he struck again at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, more than 65 miles away. Both shootings were carried out with firearms, and his actions were later found to be premeditated, with evidence of his hatred toward evangelical organizations in online postings.

  • Tiffany Johnson, 26 – killed at the mission training center.
  • Philip Crouse, 24 – fatally shot at the mission center.
  • Two others, including Dan Griebenow and Charlie Blanch, were injured but survived.
• December 9, 2007 – Colorado Springs, Colorado (New Life Church)
  • Rachel Works, 16 – killed in the church parking lot.
  • Stephanie Works, 18 – killed in the church parking lot.
  • Their father, David Works, was shot and critically injured but survived.
