In the summer of 2022, a tragic event unfolded on a street in a southeast Kansas City neighborhood, leading to the death of 35-year-old George Richards. On the evening of August 1st, police officers on patrol discovered Richards lying face down in the 5000 block of Bellefontaine Avenue. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators at the scene also noted the presence of tire tread marks across his left arm and back, suggesting a brutal end to his life.
The investigation into the death of the male victim led authorities to Shaun D. Johnson, a 42-year-old Kansas City man. Surveillance footage from the area played a crucial role in piecing together the events of that day. The video evidence reportedly showed both Johnson and Richards arriving together on Bellefontaine Avenue about half an hour before the fatal shooting. The two men were seen walking around, moving in and out of the camera's view. Later, Richards was captured on video opening the hood of a car and using a portable battery jump box to start the vehicle.
The surveillance footage allegedly captured the final moments of Richards' life. As he closed the hood of the car, the video is said to show Johnson shooting him five times. Following the shooting, the assailant reportedly drove away, running over the left side of Richards' body in the process. This act of violence left a lasting mark, both on the victim and in the evidence collected by law enforcement.
Further evidence that contributed to the case against Johnson included DNA found on the car battery jump box and cigarette butts discovered near Richards' body. Following the investigation, Shaun D. Johnson was arrested and now faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action for his alleged role in the death of George Richards. He is being held without the eligibility for bond as he awaits his next court appearance.
