On May 30, 1964, Charles Snyder, a 33-year-old gas station attendant in Elkhart, Indiana, was found dead from a .22 caliber gunshot wound to the head. The crime scene indicated a robbery, with approximately $100 missing from the cash register. Earlier that same day, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Gary Smock, a 34-year-old school teacher, was discovered tied up and murdered in his vehicle, also shot in the head with a .22 caliber firearm.
