In the early hours of Sunday, November 3, 2024, a shooting in Elkhart, Indiana, resulted in the death of 33-year-old Romulo Jesus Reyes Osuna. The incident, which took place in the 700 block of County Road 3 North, also left a second man, Carlos Martinez, critically injured. When Elkhart Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 4:40 a.m., they discovered both men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Reyes Osuna was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reyes Osuna was a well-known and beloved figure in the Elkhart community. He was the owner of the popular Madrid Tokio Fusion restaurant in the downtown area. His family described him as an extraordinary friend and a pillar in the community who was always willing to help those in need, touching countless lives with his charisma and kindness. The restaurant, which had opened in June of that year, remained closed following his death, leaving its future uncertain.
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit immediately took charge of the investigation. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, 24-year-old Joshua Peter Martinez of Plymouth. He was arrested in Wakarusa and faced charges of murder and attempted murder. A magistrate found probable cause for his arrest, and he was held without bond.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the shooting occurred outside a Halloween party. Surveillance footage captured a confrontation before the gunfire erupted. The footage also showed Martinez's vehicle at the scene and, after the shooting, running over Carlos Martinez as it fled. The surviving victim, Carlos Martinez, was able to identify Joshua Martinez as the shooter and informed police that Joshua had threatened to shoot everyone. Further evidence, including a broken part from his vehicle found at the scene, confirmed Joshua Martinez's presence at the time of the incident.
In May 2025, Joshua Martinez was found guilty by a jury for the murder of Romulo Reyes Osuna and the attempted murder of Carlos Martinez. The following month, he was sentenced to a total of 98 years in prison, receiving 60 years for the murder charge and a consecutive 38 years for the attempted murder charge. A hearing was later set to determine if Martinez would also be required to pay restitution to his victims.
