In the summer of 2016, a young father's life was tragically cut short in Elkhart, Indiana. Brandon Keith Jackson, a 24-year-old male, was killed on June 23, 2016. The events that led to his death began to unfold when police were called to an apartment in the 200 block of West Garfield Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the front door of the apartment ajar and found Jackson's body inside.
The investigation into the homicide revealed a plot to
rob Jackson that had been hatched the day before his death. A group of individuals had planned to rob Jackson after purchasing marijuana from him. The plan turned fatal when the robbery was set in motion. During the commission of the crime, Jackson was shot and killed. According to court documents, the man who shot him, Tyrell Beavers, claimed he fired after Jackson attempted to reach for his own gun.
In the months that followed, several individuals were arrested and charged in connection with the deadly robbery. Tyrell Beavers, the man identified as the shooter, was charged with murder. He pleaded guilty in October 2016 and the following month was sentenced to 45 years in prison. Another accomplice, 19-year-old Shyla Southern, entered a guilty plea for aiding in an armed robbery and received a 14-year prison sentence.
The getaway driver, Danisha Sarll, also faced charges for her role in the crime. She was sentenced to three years in prison and seven years of probation on a charge of robbery while armed with a deadly weapon. A fourth suspect, Joemongee White, also faced a murder warrant. A fifth individual, Kei'Shawn Chew, was also implicated in the robbery plan. The tragic death of Brandon Jackson left his family and community in mourning, with a vigil held to honor his memory.
