In the spring of 2015, the life of 14-year-old Dezjaun Sanders was tragically cut short in Elkhart, Indiana. On the afternoon of Tuesday, April 14, Sanders was shot in the 400 block of Harrison Street. He was rushed to Elkhart General Hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries in the emergency department. His mother, Tiffany Sanders, expressed profound grief, stating that her son had the 'whole world ahead of him' before his dreams were abruptly ended.
She had moved her family to Elkhart from Chicago to escape violence, only to lose her son to a violent act in their new community.
The investigation into the shooting quickly focused on a single suspect: 16-year-old Jwan L. Hardin. Witnesses at the scene identified Hardin as the individual who shot Sanders. Based on this information, the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office issued an arrest warrant for Hardin, charging him with one count of murder. Authorities publicly identified Hardin and warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Less than a month after the fatal shooting, on Monday, May 4, 2015, Jwan Hardin was taken into custody. A relative brought the 16-year-old to the Elkhart Police Department, where he was arrested on the outstanding murder warrant. Following his arrest, Hardin was booked into the Elkhart County Correctional Facility. While an arrest was made, law enforcement did not immediately release a motive for the shooting.
