On a late summer day in August 2021, 38-year-old Brandon Michael Lowe's life was tragically cut short in his Elkhart, Indiana apartment. Responding to a 911 call, police discovered Lowe deceased in the 400 block of North Michigan Street. The man who made the call, his 30-year-old roommate Dustin Joseph McKee, was promptly detained at the scene. Lowe was a man who was said to have lived life to the fullest and was always ready to lend a hand to someone in need.
He found joy in the outdoors, often fishing and spending time with his dog, Zeke.
An argument between the two roommates escalated to a fatal point when McKee shot Lowe. According to court documents, McKee claimed he shot Lowe because he wouldn't stop harassing him. Subsequently, McKee was charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
In February 2023, a jury found Dustin McKee guilty of the murder of Brandon Lowe. For his crimes, McKee was sentenced to a total of 83 years in prison. The sentence consisted of 55 years for the murder charge, enhanced by eight years, with an additional 10 years for the use of a firearm. He also received a six-year sentence for the firearm possession charge, enhanced by four years, with all sentences to be served consecutively. Following his sentencing, McKee indicated his intention to appeal the court's decision.
