A tragic series of events unfolded in Elkhart, Indiana, culminating in the death of two-year-old Jaxon Snyder in July 2024. The incident began when Jaxon's mother, who was out of state, received a disturbing video call from the child's father, 37-year-old Ryan D. Snyder. During the call, Ryan Snyder made threats to harm the children and himself, prompting their mother to contact the police for a welfare check at his Pendleton Drive residence.
When officers arrived at the home on the
evening of July 6, 2024, they found Ryan Snyder armed and wearing body armor. What followed was a tense 18-hour standoff, during which Snyder refused to cooperate with police negotiators and reportedly fired at a police drone. The standoff ended on the afternoon of July 7, when SWAT officers entered the home and took Snyder into custody. Inside, they made a devastating discovery: Jaxon was found deceased in a basement bedroom. His four-year-old sister was found physically unharmed, hiding in the home.
In the aftermath of the standoff, Ryan Snyder was arrested and initially charged with murder and child neglect. An autopsy was performed on Jaxon, though the official cause of death was not immediately released. Court documents revealed the threatening statements Snyder had made to the children's mother.
Ryan Snyder later underwent psychiatric evaluations. In December 2025, he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges of neglect of a dependent and criminal recklessness as part of a plea agreement. The murder charge was dismissed as part of this agreement. Snyder admitted to causing his son's death by lying on him. His sentencing was scheduled for January 2026.
