In the early morning hours of September 21, 2023, the life of 44-year-old Tom 'Tommy' Moser III, a White male, was tragically cut short by an act of gun violence in Elkhart, Indiana. Just before 3:30 a.m., residents on South Fifth Street were startled by the sound of gunfire, prompting calls to the police. When officers arrived, they discovered Moser's body in the entryway of an apartment building. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses at the scene described seeing a man fleeing the area shortly after the shots were fired. Police began a search and soon located an individual matching the suspect's description. The man, later identified as Roosevelt Lewis Jr., refused to comply with police orders and was ultimately taken into custody after being tased. Lewis was subsequently charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and criminal recklessness in connection with Moser's death.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released a motive for the attack. Roosevelt Lewis Jr., who has a previous conviction for attempted murder, has been appointed a public defender. His trial is scheduled to take place in July 2024.
