In the quiet community of Elkhart, Indiana, the life of 26-year-old Anthony Perez was abruptly and violently ended on March 30, 2014. He was found shot to death inside an apartment at the Deer Creek Apartments, a place that would become the focal point of a heart-wrenching story of betrayal and a family's fight for justice. In the weeks that followed, his mother, Maria Botello, filled with anguish, made public pleas for the arrest of her son's killer, expressing the torment of knowing the
person responsible was still free.
The investigation into Anthony's death soon focused on someone he considered a friend, 19-year-old Miguel Martinez-Villasenor. The motive for the killing was a tragic consequence of gang affiliation; Martinez-Villasenor felt that a photograph Perez had posted online was disrespectful to their gang. This perceived slight led to a fatal confrontation where Martinez-Villasenor went to Perez's apartment and shot him. Following the murder, Martinez-Villasenor fled to Chicago in an attempt to evade law enforcement.
Less than two months after the shooting, on May 13, 2014, authorities from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, acting on a warrant, arrested Martinez-Villasenor in Chicago. The news of the arrest brought a wave of mixed emotions for Anthony's mother, who had been tirelessly advocating for justice for her son. Martinez-Villasenor was then extradited back to Elkhart County to face legal proceedings.
In August 2014, Miguel Martinez-Villasenor appeared in Elkhart Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to the murder of Anthony Perez. As part of a plea agreement, he was sentenced to a term of 65 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with the final five years of the sentence suspended to non-reporting probation. The agreement also stipulated that a criminal gang enhancement would not be filed against him, which could have resulted in a longer sentence. On October 9, 2014, the sentence was formally imposed, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a senseless act of violence that forever changed the lives of the Perez family.
