In the early hours of a Sunday morning, on December 29, 2013, the life of a young Black/African American man, 22-year-old Jaymar Spain, was tragically cut short in West Haven, Connecticut. The night began with what seemed like a typical weekend scene at the Lager House Bar and Grille on Campbell Avenue, but the atmosphere would soon turn chaotic and violent, leaving a community in mourning and a family searching for answers that remain elusive to this day.
Trouble reportedly began inside
the bar with an altercation in the restroom. Bouncers at the establishment intervened, ejecting the individuals involved through separate exits in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, the conflict was far from over. Approximately 25 to 30 minutes later, around 2:00 a.m., the dispute reignited in a municipal parking lot behind the bar. It was in this parking area that the altercation escalated with fatal consequences. Numerous 911 calls flooded the West Haven Police Department, reporting a shooting and a large, chaotic scene of people fighting.
When officers arrived, they discovered Jaymar Spain unconscious and suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, but his injuries, specifically gunshot wounds to the trunk, proved to be fatal. He was pronounced dead, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. The immediate investigation was hampered by a lack of cooperation from the many individuals present at the scene. Police reported that numerous potential witnesses either refused to cooperate or claimed to have seen nothing, creating a significant obstacle for detectives trying to piece together the events of that tragic morning.
In the years that have followed the death of Jaymar Spain, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with his murder.
