On December 14, 2015, a violent tragedy unfolded in a residence on the northeast side of Indianapolis, Indiana, claiming the life of 28-year-old Penny R. Jones-Barker. A Black woman described by loved ones as a hardworking mother, Penny was employed as both a bus driver for IndyGo and a home health aide. The sequence of events began late that Monday night when Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the couple's home on the 3300 block of North Chester Avenue
following a report of a residential alarm.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers encountered the homeowner, Dorian Barker, standing on the front porch. When police inquired if everything was alright, Barker initially responded affirmatively but quickly shifted his demeanor, reportedly confessing to the officers that he had just killed his wife. Inside the home, first responders discovered Penny lifeless on the living room sofa. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the face. Investigators later recovered 13 spent shell casings near her body, indicating the severity of the attack.
Further investigation revealed that the couple was not alone in the house during the incident. Penny’s two young sons, aged 5 and 11, were asleep in an adjacent room and were physically unharmed. Penny’s sister was also present in the living room when the confrontation escalated. According to her account, the two women were sitting together when Dorian entered the room brandishing a handgun. Although Penny asked him to put the weapon away because it was frightening her, he refused. The situation turned fatal when he opened fire, emptying the magazine. The sister fled the room during the shooting, triggering the house alarm that eventually summoned law enforcement.
Dorian Barker was taken into custody at the scene without incident. As he was being escorted to the police vehicle, he reportedly made unsolicited statements justifying his actions by claiming his wife had been 'trying to kill him all day' and that she 'wouldn't let me sleep.' He was subsequently transported to the homicide office, where he was uncooperative, crumpling up the rights waiver form presented to him. He was formally arrested and charged with murder. Court records indicated that Dorian had a prior history of legal issues, including previous arrests related to domestic violence charges in 2007 and 2012, though those earlier cases had been dismissed.
