On the early morning of December 22, 2025, a violent disturbance unfolded in the 7500 block of South Village Way near English and South Shadeland avenues in Indianapolis, Indiana. Just before 2:00 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of a person shot at the location. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a 36-year-old female, later identified as Ashley Yunya Yarrell, suffering from critical gunshot wounds.
She was immediately transported to Eskenazi Hospital for urgent medical treatment, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries, and the Marion County Coroner’s Office subsequently ruled the death a homicide.
The investigation revealed that a juvenile at the scene, who was physically unharmed, had alerted a neighbor by screaming that his mother had been killed. This juvenile was later identified as the victim's 13-year-old son. Following the shooting, the teenager was reported missing, prompting a search by detectives who were concerned for his safety and needed to speak with him regarding the events he witnessed. Police successfully located the teenager safe on December 23, confirming he was not in danger after being found.
Detectives and community members collaborated to track down a suspect in connection with the homicide. On December 24, acting on multiple tips, officers located a 41-year-old man sitting in a vehicle in the 5400 block of Georgetown Road on the city's northwest side. When police attempted to approach, the suspect fled in the vehicle, leading officers on a pursuit that ended when he crashed the car. The man then attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended and taken into custody. He faces a preliminary charge of murder, though his name was withheld pending the filing of formal charges by the prosecutor's office.
Family members described Ashley Yarrell as a gentle, soft-spoken woman and a devoted mother who fought to provide for her children. In a statement released by her cousin, she was remembered as a "warrior in spirit" who faced life's challenges with grace. The family expressed devastation that she was killed by someone known to her, emphasizing their grief over the senseless act that left her children without their mother.
