In the early hours of an April morning in Indianapolis, a violent argument in an alleyway tragically cut short the life of 42-year-old Lavenna Shorter. On April 9, 2011, at approximately 2 a.m., police were dispatched to the 900 block of Sherman Avenue after a 911 caller reported hearing a gunshot followed by a woman's scream. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Shorter suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
The investigation quickly pointed to Shorter's boyfriend, Oscar Hall, who was
38 at the time. The dispute between the couple had escalated, culminating in Hall shooting Shorter in the head. Shorter's daughter was reportedly at home at the time of the incident. Following the shooting, Hall fled the scene. However, thanks to a tip from the 911 caller, law enforcement was able to track him to a residence in the 9400 block of East 43rd Street, where he was taken into custody.
During questioning by homicide detectives, Hall was subsequently charged with murder. It was revealed that Hall had a significant criminal history and had only recently been released from prison. Neighbors and family indicated that the shooting may have been precipitated by Shorter's attempts to end her relationship with Hall, with some suggesting he had been stalking her. Ultimately, Oscar Hall pleaded guilty to the murder of Lavenna Shorter. For his crime, he was sentenced to serve 60 years in prison, bringing a measure of judicial closure to the family and community devastated by this act of domestic violence.
