In the early morning hours of August 24, 2022, the life of 35-year-old LaShelle Teasley was tragically cut short on the near east side of Indianapolis. Responding to a report of a person shot on North Tuxedo Street around 6:30 a.m., police officers arrived to a grim scene. They discovered LaShelle lying in the middle of the street, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified her estranged husband, 30-year-old Marcelus Teasley, as a suspect in her killing. He was located in a nearby residence but initially refused to surrender to authorities, leading to a standoff. Believing him to be armed, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's SWAT team was called to the scene to assist with negotiations. After some time, Marcelus Teasley eventually surrendered to the officers without further incident.
The preliminary investigation suggested that the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between the estranged couple, reportedly over a firearm. Following his arrest, Marcelus Teasley was charged with murder for his alleged role in his wife's death. The final charging decision was to be made by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.
