In May of 2016, a string of violent and seemingly random attacks shattered the peace of Indianapolis, leaving a community in fear and three families mourning the loss of their loved ones. One of the victims in this tragic series of events was Jose Alberto Ruiz, a 44-year-old Hispanic male. His life was cut short on May 15, 2016, when he was found shot to death inside a car on the city's east side.
The investigation into Ruiz's death quickly linked it to two other recent homicides, those
of Billy Boyd and Jay Higginbotham, which had occurred just days earlier. The common thread in these brutal crimes was the chillingly casual and senseless nature of the violence. As law enforcement delved deeper, a disturbing motive began to surface, one that seemed to be ripped from the pages of a Hollywood script. The suspect, it would later be revealed, was on a self-proclaimed 'purge,' inspired by the horror film 'The Purge,' which depicts a night where all crime is legal.
The perpetrator of this deadly spree was identified as 19-year-old Johnathan Cruz. According to court documents and witness testimonies, Cruz embarked on his violent rampage, believing he was living out the fantasy of the film. He randomly targeted and killed his victims, instilling terror in the neighborhoods he prowled. His spree of violence and robbery came to an end with his arrest shortly after the discovery of Ruiz's body.
In the face of overwhelming evidence and the prospect of the death penalty, Johnathan Cruz ultimately pleaded guilty to three counts of murder. In exchange for his plea, he was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole.
