In the summer of 2016, the life of Leroy Brown, a 51-year-old Black man from Indianapolis, was tragically cut short. On the evening of June 25th, Brown was discovered lying in the street in the 3000 block of North Sherman Drive, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rushed him to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.
For a time, there was a glimmer of hope as his condition was upgraded to serious, but his injuries ultimately proved to be too severe, and he succumbed to them.
The investigation into the shooting suggested that it stemmed from an earlier altercation. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department identified 35-year-old Jerry Turentine as a suspect in connection with Brown's death. An arrest warrant was issued, and Turentine was subsequently taken into custody and charged with murder.
The legal proceedings that followed brought more anguish for those seeking justice for Leroy Brown. The case went to trial, and on November 8, 2017, Jerry Turentine was found not guilty of the murder charge. The verdict marked the end of the criminal case against the only suspect publicly identified in the shooting death of Leroy Brown.
