In the late spring of 2017, a confrontation in Gary, Indiana, turned deadly, leaving a 39-year-old Black man, Sherrod Carter, dead from a gunshot wound. The fatal encounter unfolded on May 22, 2017, in an alley behind an apartment building in the 2100 block of Carolina Street. Carter was discovered on the ground and rushed to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
The events that led to the shooting reportedly began with an
argument between Carter and a 19-year-old Gary resident named Wesley Darrell Trout, who was accompanied by his father. According to court documents, a witness saw the altercation and attempted to de-escalate the rising tensions. The situation, however, continued to escalate. Carter allegedly tried to break the windows of the truck belonging to Trout's father.
Surveillance footage from a nearby market captured portions of the tragic interaction. The video showed Trout driving by and then stopping to confront Carter, who was walking away from his own vehicle. Trout's father joined the dispute, at one point threatening Carter with a lug wrench. The footage then showed the younger Trout chasing Carter before firing a handgun at him.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Wesley Darrell Trout was charged with murder. According to a probable cause affidavit, Trout admitted to firing his weapon during the altercation. The evidence gathered, including the witness testimony and the surveillance video, led to the formal filing of charges against him, implicating both him and his father in the sequence of events that culminated in Sherrod Carter's death.
