In the late spring of 2017, a confrontation in Gary, Indiana, turned deadly, leaving a 39-year-old Black man, Sherrod Carter, dead from a gunshot wound. The fatal encounter unfolded on May 22, 2017, in an alley behind an apartment building in the 2100 block of Carolina Street. Carter was discovered on the ground and rushed to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
