In the chill of a November evening in Gary, Indiana, Lawrence 'Scotty' Gray, a 51-year-old man, was found with a fatal gunshot wound. The date was November 5, 2014, and the discovery of his body inside a vehicle in the 2100 block of Carolina Street marked the beginning of a protracted legal journey. Responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle, police found the engine running and Gray deceased in the driver's seat. His death was ruled a homicide by the Lake County Coroner's Office.
