Quintez Johnson, a 31-year-old Black male, was found deceased in his apartment in the 1300 block of W. 5th Avenue in Gary, Indiana, on November 15, 2021. An investigation revealed he had been shot twice in the head. There were no signs of a struggle at the scene, however, a trail of marijuana was found leading up the stairs to his apartment, suggesting a potential connection to drug-related activities.
It was later revealed that Johnson had recently begun selling marijuana to supplement his income.
Security camera footage from the apartment building played a crucial role in the investigation, showing a man arriving at Johnson's apartment and leaving shortly after the estimated time of the shooting. The man was seen carrying a handgun and a bag of marijuana. Through the use of facial recognition software, investigators identified the man as 32-year-old Tyrone Reno. He was later apprehended by U.S. Marshals.
Tyrone Reno was charged with murder and a firearm enhancement. On June 13, 2025, a Lake County jury convicted him in connection with the homicide of Quintez Johnson. He was subsequently sentenced to a total of 70 years in prison: 60 years for the murder and an additional 10 years for the firearm enhancement. The conviction and sentencing brought a measure of justice to Johnson's family.
