On the night of July 22 leading into the early morning hours of July 23, 2016, violence erupted in the streets of Gary, Indiana, claiming the life of a young man named Samuel Williams. The 20-year-old Black male, who had ties to Mount Vernon, Illinois, but was in Gary at the time, became the target of a fatal shooting that would leave his family and community searching for answers that never came.
The incident occurred just after midnight, shattering the quiet of the summer night with the sound of gunfire.
According to reports from the Lake County Coroner’s Office, Williams was struck multiple times by bullets during the confrontation. Emergency responders rushed him to the Northlake Campus of Methodist Hospitals in hopes of saving his life. despite the medical team's efforts, his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. on that Saturday. The coroner formally ruled his death a homicide, marking another tragic loss in a city that has long struggled with high rates of gun violence.
In the years following the shooting, information regarding the circumstances of the attack has remained scarce. Law enforcement investigators have not publicly identified a motive for the killing, and no suspects have been named in connection with the crime.
