In the early morning hours of July 19, 2015, the life of 18-year-old Melvin Travis Jr. was tragically cut short in his hometown of Gary, Indiana. A volunteer from a local homeless shelter discovered his body in an alleyway on the 600 block of Ridge Road, initially mistaking him for someone who had passed out. Police were dispatched to the scene at 6:23 a.m. where they found the young Black male deceased from a single gunshot wound to the side of his head. A single shell casing was recovered near ...
