In the early morning hours of July 19, 2015, the life of 18-year-old Melvin Travis Jr. was tragically cut short in his hometown of Gary, Indiana. A volunteer from a local homeless shelter discovered his body in an alleyway on the 600 block of Ridge Road, initially mistaking him for someone who had passed out. Police were dispatched to the scene at 6:23 a.m. where they found the young Black male deceased from a single gunshot wound to the side of his head.
A single shell casing was recovered near his body, a stark piece of evidence in an otherwise barren crime scene.
Melvin, who had just earned his GED months earlier in January 2015, was a father to a young daughter. He was known for his vibrant personality and infectious smile. Investigators from the Gary Police Department and the Lake County crime scene unit faced significant hurdles in their investigation. The alley where Melvin was found had few residents, making the possibility of eyewitnesses remote. Detectives entertained the theory that robbery may have been a motive, though they did not specify what, if anything, was taken from him.
Despite their efforts, the case grew cold due to a lack of evidence and leads. The lead detective on the case acknowledged the difficulties presented by the location of the crime. To this day, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the murder of Melvin Travis Jr. His killer remains at large, leaving his family and community to grapple with the unanswered questions surrounding his untimely death.
