In the cool night air of a crowded parking lot outside a Gary, Indiana nightclub, the life of 28-year-old Kevin Blackmon, a male resident of Gary, came to a violent and tragic end. On a September evening, chaos erupted as more than 80 gunshots echoed through the night, sending patrons scrambling for cover. When the firing ceased, Blackmon lay grievously wounded, having sustained 14 gunshot wounds.
The man responsible for the barrage of bullets was Fredrick Craft Jr., a 32-year-old from
the neighboring city of Hammond. Clad in a bulletproof vest, Craft unleashed a deadly assault in the packed lot. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, but its devastating consequences were undeniable. A Gary police officer, Martin Garza, witnessed the horrific event as Craft was actively shooting Blackmon. Officer Garza ordered Craft to drop his weapon, but the command was ignored.
In a tense and life-threatening confrontation, Craft turned his weapon on Officer Garza and began firing. The officer returned fire, striking Craft in the leg. Despite his injury, Craft was taken into custody at the scene. He maintained his innocence throughout the subsequent legal proceedings.
In April, a jury found Fredrick Craft Jr. guilty of murder for the death of Kevin Blackmon and attempted murder for firing at the police officer. A Lake County judge subsequently sentenced him to 55 years in prison for his crimes. The sentencing brought a measure of justice for the senseless killing of a young man in the prime of his life.
