DeShelon Hicks Jr., a 20-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the evening of September 27, 2014, in his home in Gary, Indiana. The Lake County Coroner's Office confirmed that Hicks sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the emergency room of Methodist Hospital Northlake in Gary at 11:28 p.m. His death was officially ruled a homicide. At the time of his death, Hicks, a 2012 graduate of Thea Bowman Leadership Academy, was employed at Interprize Realty in Hammond, Indiana.
