Aaron William Scott, a 30-year-old man, was fatally shot on September 23, 2019, in Gary, Indiana. The incident also resulted in the death of 32-year-old Kerry Rice Jr. and left two others wounded. The shooting occurred in a vehicle, and authorities later identified Michael Sherrod Smith as the suspect.
Following an investigation, U.S. Marshals apprehended Smith, then 35 years old, in Oakland, California, on July 21, 2020.
During the arrest, Smith attempted to flee on foot and discarded a firearm, which was recovered by law enforcement. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
After his arrest in California, Smith faced an extradition hearing to be returned to Lake County, Indiana, to stand trial for the killings of Aaron William Scott and Kerry Rice Jr. Kerry Rice Jr. was the son of a Gary police sergeant, and his brother, Steven Rice, was one of the two individuals wounded in the same shooting. In a tragic turn of events, Steven Rice, who survived the initial attack, was himself shot and killed in a separate incident on July 1, 2020.
