In the winter of 2019 in South Bend, Indiana, a promising young life was tragically cut short. Ajurin LaShaun Blake, a 16-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on the evening of January 13, 2019. Known affectionately as 'Aj Walker,' he was a sophomore at Washington High School where he was not only an excellent student but also a talented athlete, participating in football, basketball, and track and field. He also worked a part-time job at a local Little Caesars Pizza.
Ajurin was standing in front of a home on North Brookfield Street when he was struck by a bullet to the head. He was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday, January 14, 2019.
An autopsy confirmed that Ajurin Blake's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit took charge of the investigation into the shooting, which also injured another individual. Despite appeals to the public for any information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case, no arrests have been made in connection with Ajurin's murder. The community was deeply impacted by the loss of a young man who was known for his warm smile and was looking forward to his future. The investigation into his death remains open as his family and friends continue to seek justice.
