In the early evening of March 24, 2015, a dispute at a gas station in South Bend, Indiana, ended in the tragic death of 52-year-old Gary Gene Gray. A male, Gray was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Emmett Calvin White, 58, when they pulled into the Always Open Gas Station at 1401 N. Bendix Drive. An argument erupted between the two men, which escalated to a fatal degree.
Following the discussion, White allegedly shot Gray in the chest while he was outside near a gas pump.
South Bend Police were called to the scene shortly before 7 p.m. and found Gray with an apparent gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was then tasked with investigating the killing.
Investigators were able to quickly identify White as the primary suspect. A crucial piece of evidence was a credit card he had used to purchase gas at the station, which was later found in his wallet upon his arrest. His identity was further confirmed by an eyewitness to the shooting who positively identified him.
Emmett Calvin White was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Gary Gray. He was held at the St. Joseph County Jail without bond.
