In the late spring of 2019, a violent encounter in Elkhart, Indiana, cut short the life of 25-year-old Ishmael Hykiesh Porter. On May 26th, on a residential block of Sherman Street, an argument escalated to a fatal conclusion. Witnesses reported that following a dispute, a woman pointed a handgun at Porter and fired. After he collapsed to the ground, she proceeded to shoot him several more times.
Porter was found critically injured and was rushed to a hospital in South Bend, where he ultimately succumbed to his wounds. An autopsy would later reveal he had been struck by eight bullets.
The investigation into the death of the young father quickly identified a suspect, Iman Cashmere Lula Gregory. A warrant for her arrest on a charge of murder was issued shortly after the shooting. For several months, Gregory managed to evade capture, prompting a search that extended beyond Indiana. The efforts of the Elkhart County Homicide Unit and U.S. Marshals eventually tracked her to Atlanta, Georgia, where she was taken into custody in late September of that year and extradited back to Indiana to face the charges against her.
In October 2021, Iman Gregory, then 27, stood trial for the murder of Ishmael Porter. During the proceedings, prosecutors presented the witness accounts of the shooting. The defense countered with a claim of self-defense, with Gregory testifying that she was in fear for her life, alleging that Porter had grabbed a gun from his girlfriend just before she opened fire. The jury, after deliberation, found her guilty of murder. With the conviction, she faced the possibility of a significantly enhanced sentence, potentially up to 85 years in prison, with her sentencing scheduled for the following month.
