On a December evening in Elkhart, Indiana, a dispute that began as a fistfight tragically escalated, ending the life of 16-year-old Ontario Brown Jr. The male teenager was on Wagner Avenue on December 19, 2014, when he was shot in the head. Police were called to the 300 block of the street near the Washington Gardens apartments around 7:35 p.m. and found Brown with a single, devastating gunshot wound.
He was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support but succumbed to his injuries the following day. His family made the decision to donate his organs, an act that would save eight other lives.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a senseless chain of events. Witnesses told police that Brown had been in a fistfight with one individual. After the fight concluded and Brown was starting to leave with a friend, another teenager, 16-year-old Keenan Mardis of Chicago, confronted him. Mardis, who had been staying with friends in the Elkhart area, demanded Brown's designer belt. When Brown refused to hand it over, Mardis pulled out a handgun and shot him in the head before fleeing the scene with his friends. The killing was later described as being gang-related and connected to other violence in the area.
In the weeks following the shooting, police identified Mardis as the primary suspect. He was arrested in February 2015. During questioning, Mardis initially tried to blame the person who had been in the fistfight with Brown for the shooting, but multiple witnesses corroborated the events, implicating Mardis. His trial began in August 2015, and a jury found him guilty of murder. The defense attorney argued that it was a case of mistaken identity due to the darkness at the time of the incident. However, testimony from Brown's friend and another witness proved compelling. On September 24, 2015, Keenan Mardis was sentenced to 58 years in prison for the murder of Ontario Brown Jr.
