In the early evening of May 29, 2019, an act of violence cut short the life of 18-year-old Domanic Jones, a male from Indianapolis. While behind the wheel of his car in the Indianapolis suburb of Lawrence, Jones was struck by gunfire. The impact of the gunshot caused him to lose control of his vehicle and crash into a traffic signal pole at the intersection of 56th Street and Boy Scout Road. When law enforcement arrived, they found Jones in critical condition.
He was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Initial reports from witnesses indicated that they heard gunshots originating from inside the car just before the crash. There were three other passengers in the vehicle with Jones at the time of the incident. These individuals fled the scene immediately after the vehicle came to a stop but were later located and taken into custody for questioning by police. As the investigation progressed, detectives determined that the fatal shots were not fired from within Jones's car. Instead, they believed a second vehicle had pulled alongside Jones's car, and an occupant of that vehicle had opened fire. This led investigators to surmise that the shooting was not a random act and that the suspects were known to Jones.
The investigation swiftly led to the apprehension of two suspects, a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old. Both teenagers were arrested in the days following the shooting and faced preliminary murder charges. Due to their juvenile status, their names were not immediately released to the public, with officials stating that their identities would be revealed if they were ultimately charged as adults. The final charging decisions were to be made by the county prosecutor. The case brought attention to the issue of youth violence in the community, given the ages of both the victim and the alleged perpetrators. Despite the arrests, a definitive motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed by law enforcement.
