Michael Gilbert, a 23-year-old man, died on October 6, 2013, while in custody at a St. Louis jail. The circumstances surrounding his death were as follows:
Gilbert was initially arrested and placed in a holdover cell. Officers observed him attempting to harm himself by tying clothing around his neck and the cell bars. When officers intervened to restrain Gilbert, a struggle ensued. Multiple officers were involved in subduing Gilbert, who resisted and became combative.
