In the early hours of a cold January morning in Indianapolis, the life of Nicholas Fine, a 30-year-old White male, was tragically cut short. On January 27, 2020, while working as a security guard at the Pony Club on the city's west side, Fine was involved in a fatal altercation. The incident began when a patron, identified as 34-year-old Damien Sutton, became unruly and was escorted out of the establishment by Fine.
What started as a routine part of his job quickly escalated into a
violent confrontation. After being removed from the club, Sutton went to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and returned to confront Fine. An exchange of gunfire erupted between the two men near the front of the club. In the ensuing shootout, both Nicholas Fine and Damien Sutton sustained fatal injuries.
Responding officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department found Fine with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries during surgery. Sutton was discovered deceased in his car in the club's parking lot. The subsequent investigation by homicide detectives determined that Sutton was the aggressor in the incident.
Investigators concluded that Nicholas Fine had acted in self-defense during the confrontation. As a result of these findings, no charges were filed in connection with the shooting. The case was deemed to be an instance of justifiable homicide, and the investigation was closed without any arrests being made.
