In what has been described as a 'Wild West' shootout, 33-year-old Juan Manuel Alfaro Escobar was killed on August 18, 2024, in a parking lot near 42nd Street and Post Road in Lawrence, a community just outside of Indianapolis. His death was the result of a violent altercation that also claimed the lives of two other men, 35-year-old Candido Eustaquio Antunez Guillen and 38-year-old Daniel Alberto Morales Uribe.
Both Escobar and Guillen were pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, while Uribe was transported to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The deadly encounter is believed to be rooted in a long-standing and bloody feud between two Honduran families that had spilled over into the United States. Prior to the shooting, Alfaro Escobar had filed multiple police reports alleging that Guillen had threatened his life. In these reports, he claimed that Guillen's family had been responsible for the deaths of his father and other family members back in Honduras. This deep-seated animosity appears to have culminated in the fatal meeting in the Indianapolis parking lot.
Following the shooting, two individuals were taken into custody in connection with the triple homicide. One of the men arrested was identified as Santos Alfaro-Escobar, the 29-year-old brother of Juan Manuel Alfaro Escobar. The other suspect was identified as 29-year-old Justo Miguel Antunez Escobar. Santos Alfaro-Escobar reportedly told authorities that he and his brother had gone to the location to support Juan. Both men are being held on ICE detainers. They face preliminary charges of battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness, although formal charges have not yet been filed.
Surveillance footage from the area showed two cars fleeing the scene after the shootout. One of the vehicles, a red Ford Focus, later crashed into another car at the intersection of 38th Street and Post Road. Two men were seen fleeing the wrecked vehicle, one of whom appeared to be carrying a rifle. One of the individuals who fled the crash was later identified as Santos Alfaro-Escobar. The wife of Daniel Alberto Morales Uribe, who is related to Guillen, told police that her husband had gone to the parking lot to try and de-escalate the conflict but was caught in the crossfire when the shooting began.
