In what began as a roadside dispute, Gavin Dasaur, a 29-year-old man of Indian origin, was fatally shot in Indianapolis. The incident unfolded on the evening of July 16, 2024, at the intersection of South Emerson Avenue and Thompson Road, escalating from a confrontation between two drivers. Dasaur, who had recently married Cinthya Viviana Zamora just 18 days prior, was on his way home with his wife when the fatal encounter occurred.
The situation turned deadly following a road rage
incident involving Dasaur's black Honda and a white Chevy pickup truck. Witnesses and video footage captured Dasaur exiting his vehicle while holding a handgun. He then approached the driver's side of the pickup truck, struck the door with the weapon, and shouted at the driver. In response, the driver of the Chevy extended his own handgun from the window and fired multiple shots at Dasaur, who then fell to the ground. Emergency responders arrived to find Dasaur in the middle of the road with at least one gunshot wound; he was transported to a hospital where he later died.
The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and was initially detained by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. However, after consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, the shooter was released from custody. Authorities indicated that the preliminary investigation suggests the shooter may have acted in self-defense. As of late July 2024, the investigation was ongoing, and it will be up to the prosecutor's office to determine if any charges will be filed in the case.
