Theodore John Helpling III, a 43-year-old male, was fatally shot following what police believe began as an argument inside a bar. The incident occurred just before 2:30 a.m. on the 4200 block of East New York Street, where officers were dispatched in response to a report of a person shot.
Upon their arrival near the New Yorker Bar, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders pronounced Theodore John Helpling III dead at the scene, his life ending abruptly due to gun violence. The second man found at the scene was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Helpling was remembered as a beloved husband to Michelle McKinney-Helpling, a loving father to his sons, Micheal Jay Asselstine and Michael James Helpling, and a doting grandfather. Those who knew him described him as kind, loyal, and generous, a man who cherished his family above all else. His interests included the Indianapolis Colts, music, games, and science fiction.
