In a residence on Draycott Avenue in the Indianapolis suburb of Lawrence, the life of 25-year-old Stephen Banks, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short on April 7, 2021. Responding officers discovered him inside the home, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite their immediate efforts to render aid, Banks succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also present was Banks' girlfriend, who sustained a graze wound during the violent encounter.
The investigation into the shooting swiftly identified a primary suspect: Jashawn Jones. Investigators learned that Jones was the father of Banks' girlfriend's child and that a history of conflict existed between them, to the extent that a protective order against Jones was pending at the time of the fatal shooting. The evidence against Jones began to mount as surveillance footage and a patrol officer's dash camera captured his vehicle leaving the area of the crime.
Forensic evidence further solidified the case against Jashawn Jones. His DNA was discovered on shell casings recovered from the crime scene, directly linking him to the weapon used. Additionally, investigators uncovered threatening messages that Jones had sent to his child's mother prior to the incident, revealing a clear motive. Following his arrest, Jones was charged with murder, attempted murder, and carrying a handgun without a license. After a trial, the jury deliberated for approximately one hour before returning a guilty verdict on all counts. On February 3, 2023, Jashawn Jones was sentenced to 95 years in prison for the murder of Stephen Banks.
