On a cold December evening in South Bend, Indiana, a decision to warm up a car would tragically lead to the end of a man's life. Anthony Craig Logan, a 38-year-old man, was fatally shot on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. The events unfolded around 7:20 p.m. in the 2000 block of Lincolnway West, where police were dispatched following a shots fired call. Upon their arrival, they discovered a car that had crashed into a yard with Logan inside, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly revealed a complex story that began with a car theft. The vehicle Logan was found in had been left running and unoccupied to warm up in front of a residence. When the woman who had been using the car, 27-year-old Revlon Harrell, realized it was being stolen, she initially claimed to have taken matters into her own hands. Harrell told investigators that she grabbed a pistol and fired numerous rounds at the departing vehicle. Based on her statement, she was initially arrested on a preliminary charge of voluntary manslaughter.
However, the narrative took a dramatic turn as detectives continued their investigation. A search of the home produced a security camera system that had recorded both video and audio of the incident. This footage revealed that Harrell had remained on the porch and had not fired a weapon. Instead, the video showed her 33-year-old boyfriend, Fred Morris, approaching the driver's side of the stolen car and firing six shots at close range into the driver's side window.
Faced with this irrefutable evidence, Harrell admitted that Morris had asked her to take the blame for the shooting because of his prior criminal record, which included a federal weapons violation. Subsequently, the charges against Harrell were amended to assisting a criminal. Fred Morris was formally charged with murder and a felony firearm sentencing enhancement. He later surrendered to police on January 9, 2021.
