In a tragic turn of events on March 13, 2021, 23-year-old Dequan Moore, a male from Indianapolis, Indiana, lost his life in a quadruple homicide. The devastating incident, which also claimed the lives of his mother, Tomeeka Brown, his seven-year-old niece, Eve Moore, and his cousin, Anthony Johnson, unfolded at a residence on Randolph Street. The violence erupted following a dispute over a $1,400 stimulus check.
The conflict began when Malik Halfacre, the boyfriend of Dequan's sister,
Jeanettrius Moore, was discovered going through her purse in an attempt to take her stimulus check. An argument ensued, during which Dequan stood up for his sister, telling Halfacre he could not have the money. In response, Halfacre produced a gun and opened fire, fatally shooting Dequan, his mother, niece, and cousin. Jeanettrius Moore was also shot during the attack but managed to survive.
Following the shooting, Halfacre fled the scene, taking his and Jeanettrius's six-month-old daughter with him. The infant was later found unharmed. An intense manhunt for Halfacre concluded the next day when he was located by a SWAT team hiding in the attic of a home on Eastridge Road. After a standoff, he was taken into custody.
During the investigation, Malik Halfacre admitted to the killings, stating that he wanted a portion of the stimulus money. In June 2024, he pleaded guilty to four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. For his crimes, Halfacre was sentenced to 145 years in prison, bringing a measure of legal closure to the grieving families of Dequan Moore and the other victims.
