On the early morning of Saturday, December 11, 2021, a violent series of events unfolded in Indianapolis, Indiana, claiming the life of Curtis L. Wright Jr., an 18-year-old Black / African American male. The incident occurred on the city’s northwest side, where Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched following reports of a person down.
Just before 2:00 a.m., first responders arrived at the 5800 block of West 62nd Street, near Zionsville Road, and discovered Wright suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel quickly transported the teenager to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff to save him, Wright succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The Marion County Coroner’s Office later ruled his death a homicide caused by the gunshot wound. His passing marked a particularly grim period for the city, as he was one of four individuals killed in separate incidents across Indianapolis within a single 24-hour span that weekend.
Curtis L. Wright Jr. was remembered in his obituary as a dedicated young man who was successfully balancing two jobs while remaining active as a student-athlete. Born on September 4, 2003, he was a member of the Eastern Star Church and was described as a beloved son and brother. The tragedy cut short a life that was just beginning to take shape, leaving his family and community to mourn the sudden loss.
Homicide detectives, led by Detective Christopher Higgins, launched an investigation into the shooting, canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence. Police urged the public to come forward with any information, utilizing Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana to field anonymous tips. Despite the initial investigative efforts and the public appeal for leads, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been reported in connection with his murder. The case remains an open investigation as authorities continue to seek justice for the slaying.
